Traveling to Hungary

A post by Hugrún Lind Stefánsdóttir

This trip was very fun and exciting. We learned a lot about the Hungarian culture and past. We landed on a Saturday and went to Eger by a car. We met our families and had lunch and got a bit of rest after a long day of travelling. But then we went to a birthday party later that day and saw Csenge sing and play the guitar.

On Sunday we decided to go to a small zoo and took a boat ride for an hour and saw the beautiful landscape. We then went to look at the animals and saw some fishes, goats, sheep and some deers. The first day we had a program we went to Budapest and I think the most interesting, exciting and beautiful place we visited was the parliament and learned about the history of the first king, Saint Stephen. We also walked around a dock where people were told to take off their in 1944-1945 since the shoes were the most expensive part of their “outfit” and then they were shot in the head and were let to fall into a river.

The second day we stayed in Eger and looked around and had a fun scavenger hunt. Then during the evening/night we went to a spa and had so much fun just talking and laying around. On Wednesday we were at the school for a couple of hours cooking Gulyàs soup but after that we went to the university and learned that the university was first banned to be a university because Hungary already had one in Budapest. We then went bowling with the hosts and it was so much fun. On Thursday, we took a train to Szilvásvárad and took a forest train up a mountain and the hiked up 800 meters more and went to a cave where they found actual evidence of cavemen. After we went home we went to Anna’s house and had some bread with pig fat on and had so much fun.

Friday we learned a bit more about the Hungarian history and then went to see the Eger castle which was so beautiful, we then went to the Géza Gárdonyi museum which is a museum of a famous writer here in Eger. After that we went back to the school and had some lunch and started blogging. After the program we went to the mall, home for a bit of rest and then to the spa again. This trip was so much fun and this is a country that I recommend that everyone has to visit at least once in their life time.
